Due to the Doi Tung Wildlife Breeding and Conservation Station in Mae Fa Luang District, Chiang Rai Province, having a limited operational area of approximately 150 rai, it was unable to expand its capacity to accommodate more wildlife for breeding. As a result, the Royal Forest Department conducted a survey to identify a suitable new location for wildlife breeding. The chosen site was within the boundaries of the Mae Lao Left Forest Reserve and the Mae Kok Right Forest Reserve, in Chom Mok Kaeo Subdistrict, Mae Lao District, Chiang Rai Province. The construction and establishment of the new station began in 1997 (B.E. 2540).
